What Is Silica Fume? Uses, Benefits and Applications
16 Oct 2026
Silica fume is an ultrafine, amorphous silica powder collected as a by-product when silicon and ferrosilicon alloys are made in electric arc furnaces. It is also known as microsilica.
Its particles are about a hundred times smaller than cement grains. That makes silica fume extremely effective at filling tiny gaps and reacting with free lime, so it is used in high-performance concrete, grouts, fibre cement, oil-well cement and refractories.
The benefits are higher strength, lower porosity and better durability. In refractories, silica fume improves packing and high-temperature performance of castables.
Bahubali Chemical Industries supplies refractory grade, gypsum board grade and white silica fume from Vadodara.
